Art has always been an important aspect of my life. Ever since I was a child, I knew that I wanted to go into a career relating to art. My first intention was to become a graphic artist, but I felt that I was being led into another direction for my career. I realized that I wanted to help people using art because I knew how important art was for me to overcome many obstacles, and because I wanted to teach children about art to show them that they can have a positive outlet for expression. Art is important because it helps to free the mind from the captivities of life, and art is a great way to express ones feelings they may be encountering. Art is also important because without it, I believe, we would not have many of the nice things that are present in our lives. So many things are created by art or an artist, someone with a creative mind. We would not have many of the buildings that we live in today, the clothes we wear, the cars we drive, the food we eat, the way we decorate our houses, nor the new technology that is so prevalent in our world. These things have to be created, and without art they would be nonexistent. I decided that I wanted to become an art teacher because I knew how important art was, and I wanted to share that with others around me. I wanted to instill in students that art has been a part of our past, present, and future in all things. I know that integrating art in a classroom setting helps students to retain information presented to them on any subject area. Art is a subject that I have a great passion for, and I enjoy having the opportunity to share the importance of it with students and people of all ages.
As an art teacher, one has to be a facilitator of many things. One needs to facilitate a positive learning environment and an encouraging atmosphere where students feel free to express themselves creatively. I feel the need to do whatever I can to try to encourage students to learn in the classroom, and to push them to the best of their abilities, regardless of how they view their artwork. As an art teacher, one also needs to be assertive, caring, and positive. One needs to know how to manage their classroom effectively. This is handled by dealing with rowdy students in the right manner, and making sure the students stay on task the entire class period. One of my goals is to make sure students are comprehending and remembering what they are learning from each lesson they are taught in the classroom. Another goal of mine is to keep students excited about art and for them to enjoy my classroom environment. An important issue to realize is that each class has a different dynamic and that one cannot teach each class the same way. All of these are a part of my teaching philosophy; the things that are vital for a successful learning environment and positive atmosphere in my classroom.
Creating a positive learning environment is accomplished in many different ways. Positivity can be created by encouraging students. There will be incentive programs in place in my classroom, such as playing music in the classroom, project jar/free Fridays, candy, sitting with a friend, artist recognition, movie day, or a family viewing of the students artwork. I always strive to push the students to the best of their abilities, and I tell them to never give up. I want them to realize that their work is appreciated. This is very important because as an art teacher, many students make negative statements in accordance with their abilities in art. However, I try to combat this mindset by making encouraging statements to the students about their work, and I remind them that they can be successful and create amazing projects if they just put their mind in it and put forth the effort. Any and every one can create art, and I want to instill this idea in my students and the community around me.
Another part of my teaching philosophy is to constantly obtain a management system that is assertive, caring, and positive. To be an assertive teacher, one needs to have a voice of a teacher to where all students will listen and pay attention because they know you have the authority in the classroom. One also needs to be assertive when handling disruptive behavior in the classroom. This can be handled in a number of ways by giving the students eye contact, making a gesture towards the student to settle down, proximity, and by talking to the student. When addressing a student’s misbehavior I want to make sure to not embarrass them in front of their peers. If something needs to be said to the student, I will pull them aside and address them individually. One of my main concerns with classroom management is how to keep the students engaged. I want to put forth much of my efforts in this category because the students engagement affects their learning in the classroom. It is important to have personality when giving a lesson, to encourage the students, and to give individual help when necessary. The students want to know that you care, and this is a goal of mine as a teacher. I want my classroom to feel as a home, where they are glad to be in my classroom learning about art, and where they will be engaged and treat me with respect.
The main goal of presenting a lesson is for the students to remember what they have been taught, and for the students to comprehend the material that you have presented. In my classroom, I will do this in a variety of ways. I plan for my lessons to build upon the next, so when I present a new project to start on, the students will already have some basic skills to begin the project. In doing this, it will help the students to be able to relate more to the project, and for it not to seem so overwhelming when beginning. First, hooking them with an interesting question at the start of a lesson is always important because that gets the students attention. Then I will present to them the things they may already know about the project, or some things that may be new. My lessons will not only give instruction, but they will also include discussion in the classroom, whether if that is done in peer groups, or between the students and myself. When the students are working on their projects I plan to use that time to go around and give one-on-one assistance when a student needs help, or by addressing the class as a whole if the question seems as if it can apply to each student. I will be assessing each student’s progress and understanding during working time while making my way around the classroom. It is important to be moving around the classroom instead of being stationary at your desk. This helps students to notice that you care in what they are doing, and that you are always there to help them in whatever they may need.
My teaching philosophy also addresses the important fact that not every classroom has the same dynamic, so not every classroom can be taught in the same manner. Each class should be managed accordingly in relation to the abilities and attitudes of the class. Going into a school year, one may find it difficult to implement the right management plan; however, as the year slowly progresses it is important to note different attributes of each class to be able to adjust the management system in the right way. A foundation of management skills should be in place when coming into a position, but the foundation will not be solidified until one can learn and notice how the students act and react in the classroom. It is also important to realize that students come from all different sorts of backgrounds, and not all have the same abilities as the others in the classroom. As an art teacher, it is my responsibility to find and implement the best learning system so that all students can succeed in the classroom.
These are all important factors of my teaching philosophy that I wish to implement in my own classroom setting. When making decisions about my classroom I will take into consideration the positive and negative consequences that may occur, so that I can make sure to make the best decisions necessary to benefit all of my students. I will remember to be assertive and stand my ground on how I want things to be ran in my classroom, and I will not let the students walk all over me. I will be caring and encouraging, pushing the students to excel and progress through their studies. I really believe that I have chosen the right career because I find joy in teaching the students about art, which is what I love. I want to encourage my students to go out and share the new information they learn from my classroom with their peers and the community around them because I believe that all should be educated in some form of art.
